Erasing one word for every imprisoned journalist
For World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, we launched the Erased together with Free Press Unlimited and 180. Erasing one word for every imprisoned journalist.
There have never been more journalists imprisoned than today. Last year alone a 20% increase. A characteristic of the problem of censorship, is that it's invisible to the public. Because we can't read what isn't published.
The font, created by 180, visualises the increasing attack on press freedom, by erasing one word for every journalist that was imprisoned in 2022, amounting to 363 erased words. Words, from topics imprisoned journalists reported on.
180 approached Wonderland to join the project as its digital partner for the journey. Our aim was to create an interactive website to showcase the erased font in action as well as a tool to be installed on press websites that shows their content using the erased font, bringing awareness to this cause.
Journalism is a craft of courage and powerful words. As much strength is exhibited in the words that made it on paper, there is equal power in the words that have been erased. Through the digital experience, the user interacts with a customised element showcasing the erased font. The user can observe the complete words slowly get wiped out. The core objective is to honour and voice out stories about censored and imprisoned journalists all around the world. With those stories, we aim to stand behind press freedom and raise awareness around violation towards journalists.
We're incredibly proud to be part of this journey as the digital partner. Massive thanks for the great collaboration with Free Press Unlimited and 180.
